Industry Situation:
Pharmaceutical manufacturing involves over 85,000 drugs/intermediates, only ~1,000 (3%) have established Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs).
NIOSH’s Solution:

Studies have shown that more occupational diseases occur in laboratory operations than in manufacturing !
Laboratory operations are usually characterized by the following:
- The location, frequency and duration of operations are not fixed;
- Small doses, usually less than 1 kg;
- The wide variety of active pharmaceutical products handled, with varying health hazards;
- Different handling requirements for different chemicals and active pharmaceutical products;
- The working content is not fixed, and it is difficult to get a specific operation procedure;
- Operators are unable to fully grasp the health hazards of a wide range of chemicals and active pharmaceutical products;
- Standardized occupation health management procedures are usually not established and implemented;
